My mom and sister both live in Dallas and I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. It's been impossible to get together to plan with our different locations and schedules (Mom has 2 jobs, Sister has 1, I have 3 kids) so we are using Pinterest to brainstorm.
Pinterest has a great option to open a personal board to other members. I made a board for our trip then listed my mom and sister as contributors. Now we can all pin whatever we want to one board, check out each others pins, and comment on the pins to communicate with each other whenever we each have time.
Being able to add the price of different attractions has also been really helpful for each of us to get a feel for how much we'll be spending so we can save! I use is as a motivator: these shoes now or that show in New York?
I also love having all the information in the same spot so I can get a really good feel for the location before we get there. I do better when I know where I am, how the culture works, how to bail myself out if I get in trouble, etc!
As our trip gets closer we'll take a closer look at everything and keep only the best ideas for our actual trip. It's still a work in progress but feel free to check it out:

I don't feel married to the idea of Italy though, so if you have a better idea, I'm all ears!
